Your Strengths Are Probably Not What You Think

by Steve Victor

When I coach sales leaders, I often ask a simple question: "What are your greatest strengths?"

Most people answer with things like:

  • Resilience
  • Communication
  • Work ethic
  • Negotiation
  • Relationship building.

They're all good answers. But they're rarely the real answer.

Your greatest strengths are usually the things you don't even think about.

The things that come so naturally to you that you assume everyone else can do them too.

Maybe it's...

  • Building trust within minutes
  • Simplifying complex problems
  • Remaining calm when everyone else is under pressure
  • Asking the question that nobody else is willing to ask
  • Seeing opportunities before your competitors do.

Those are the strengths that create real value.

The challenge is that we often overlook them because they feel effortless.

One of the best ways to discover your true strengths is to stop asking yourself...

"What am I good at?"

…and start asking others..."When have you seen me at my best?"

The answers are often surprising and once you know your strengths...Lean into them.

Build your role around them. Develop your team around them. That's where sustained high performance comes from.

Question for you:

What's one strength you've discovered about yourself that you didn't fully appreciate until someone else pointed it out?
