Your biggest leadership weakness might be the thing you think you are best at

by Steve Victor

Sometimes the very thing that helped you become successful can eventually hold you back.

That's the problem with leadership blind spots. You can't see them.

Sometimes the very thing that helped you become successful can eventually hold you back.

  • Being decisive can become not listening
  • Being confident can become not asking for help
  • Being results-focused can become forgetting about the people delivering the results
  • Being experienced can become assuming you already know the answer
  • Being approachable can become avoiding difficult conversations.

The uncomfortable truth?

Your strengths can become weaknesses when they're overused.

That's why I think good leaders need people around them who are prepared to tell them what they don't want to hear.

Not people who agree with everything you say.

People who will say:

"Steve, I think you're missing something here." and then give you the honest reason why.

One of the best questions you can ask your team is:

"What's one thing I could do differently that would make me a better leader?"

Then comes the hard part. Don't defend yourself. Don't explain. Don't tell them why they're wrong.

Listen.

Because the things that make us uncomfortable are often the things we most need to hear.

Leadership isn't about eliminating your weaknesses.

It's about becoming aware of them.

What's a leadership blind spot you've discovered about yourself?
