A great sales demo isn't a product tour. It's a step towards winning the deal.

by Steve Victor

One of the common mistakes I see in sales is jumping into a product demo before understanding what the buyer actually needs to achieve.

You can deliver a comprehensive demonstration, impress the audience with features, and still lose the deal.

So, what makes a demo convert?

Here are 5 things to get right:

  1. Understand the problem first. Get the buyer to walk you through their current process, the frustrations, the inefficiencies and the cost of doing nothing.
  2. Plan the demo around their priorities. Show how your solution addresses their specific challenges, not every feature your product offers.
  3. Make it a conversation. Ask questions, listen to reactions and explore what resonates. Don't just click through slides and screens.
  4. Engage every stakeholder. Different people have different priorities. Understand what matters to each of them and address their concerns.
  5. Agree on the next step. Before you finish, establish how well the solution meets their needs, what's still unresolved and what happens next.

Here's the real test:

If your demo ends without a clear next step, was it really moving the deal forward?

Sales leaders, how much attention does your team give to demo discipline?
